Literacy Corner

This month’s Literacy Corner will focus on how parents can support their child’s reading by encouraging reading at home.

Reading at home
We’ve all heard the saying, “Practice makes perfect.”  It doesn’t just refer to sports or playing an instrument, but to reading as well.  Students need to read a lot if we want them to become better readers.  Allowing time for reading at home provides opportunities for your child to learn new vocabulary, to improve fluency, increase comprehension and develop a love of reading and learning.  Two of the most important factors in getting students to read more are to encourage them to read books that they want to read and to choose books that they can read independently.

Parent tips:
1.  Go to the library and check out as many books as you can for your children to read.
2.  Allow your child to re-read easy, familiar books.
3.  Help your child select books that are “Just Right”.
a. Is your child interested in it?
b. Can she read almost all of the words?
c. Does she read it smoothly?
d. Can she understand it?
4. Talk to your child about what he is reading.  Don’t quiz him, keep the conversation
    relaxed.
